In the twenty years since BCM opened its doors, many of Atlanta’s dreams have been realized. As host of the 1996 Olympic Games and home to the nation’s busiest airport, a world-renowned symphony and aquarium, and seventeen Fortune 500 companies, Atlanta has secured a prominent place on the world stage.
Atlanta’s rapid growth has also brought fierce challenges, leaving many to struggle in the face of rising home prices and longer, more-expensive commutes. Today, twenty-seven percent of our neighbors live below the poverty line. Forty-eight percent of our city’s children live in low-income homes. Their parents work as bank tellers, teach your children, and greet you at the doctor’s office. They are the hardworking poor of all faiths and creeds, who never give up in their battle to thrive. When illness strikes or jobs are cut, they do not have the savings or family support to pay for even the basics, such as food and shelter. The good news is that your gifts to BCM make it possible for these families to overcome such trials and flourish in the growing Atlanta community.
In 2007, BCM anticipates serving more than 10,000 people across Atlanta. We have estimated that this will require $2.3 million dollars in 2007. We know that this cannot happen without funding and support from the entire community. BCM is blessed that the churches of BCM consistently provide for 30% of the money needed annually. In the coming months we are asking our community of foundations, businesses and individuals to give a total $712,000.
A great city is marked not only by its progress, but also by its compassion, and as a friend to BCM, you exemplify Atlanta’s greatness. Your contribution during this milestone year will ensure that families will not be homeless, children will not go hungry and thousands will experience the compassion of Atlanta.
